Ten Awesome Templates from Alice Keeler

Alice Keeler is a teacher/tech blogger/PD presenter. Follow her blog for great tips and resources. Today's list comes from the templates section on her blog. I wanted to highlight some of my favorite templates she has shared.

1. Making Pixel Art

With this template students can make pixel art by typing a number in the cell on Google Sheets. It's great for virtual art teachers.

  • 1=red
  • 2=orange
  • 3=yellow
  • 4=green
  • 5=blue
  • 6=purple
  • 7=pink
  • 8=brown
  • 9=black
  • 0=gray

2. High Frequency Word Assessment Record Form with Built In Review Flashcards

This spreadsheet uses the Fry word lists, but you can change the words in the template to whatever you like. During assessment use the tab at the bottom that corresponds to the list you want to assess (e.g. the tab for 1-100 has Fry's first 100 words). Using the yellow boxes you can mark student mastery. When a student reads the word correctly type C if they read the word, A if they almost got it, and leave it alone if they do not yet have the word mastered. Hit the tab key on the keyboard to move over quickly to the next cell.

The first sheet in the file is labeled Review. It is the first tab at the bottom. The words that appear here will automatically change based on student assessment results. After the assessment, it will only show words that students are still working on learning. That Review tab feeds into the flashcard tab. Push play on the flashcard tab (and hit allow on the script) and you now have a set of differentiated digital flashcards specific to that student's needs.

3. Brownie Division

This template holds a single math challenge in three different forms. The purpose of this challenge is to help your students dive deeper into what division really means. Students use the same codes from the pixel art template above to show how to divide a pan of brownies amongst a certain number of friends.

The first sheet in this file is labeled brownies in the tab at the bottom. This sheet gives a challenge with a remainder. Students will have to leave some brownies in the pan if they want to keep the portions equal.

The 8 friends tab gives a challenge where all brownies will be able to be distributed.

The Make Your Own Pans tab allows students to define the constraints of the word problem.

4. Dice Place Value

With this template students roll virtual dice to model a number in the thousands. Students can use the text box and drawing tools on the slide to fill out the graphic organizer or they can use actual manipulatives and paper then take pictures of their work using the Insert menu. Insert>Image>Camera.

5. Measurement Activity

Students will count the squares to measure the clipart image in this template. They can use the same color codes from the pixel art activity above to mark the squares they've counted. They write their answer in the yellow box. They can take a second measurement and write it in the blue box.

6. Writing Journal Template

This template makes use of the Headings and Table of Contents feature in Google Docs as well as the Outline. Students write their new journal entry and the table of contents and Outline will provide you with a link to skip down easily to that section of the document. When students need a new entry they will need to use the formatting tools to make new headings.

7. Drag and Sort

The first template on this post is a drag and sort template where students can sort shapes by color, size, and shape.

8. Numbers

Students can use the shape tool in Google Slides to model the numbers 1-10 or 1-20. See item number three in this post for the template.

9. Checklist

The first template in this blog post helps you generate a checklist where you can click in the box to check off student participation. The second one helps you make a weather graph.

10. Graphing

The first template in this blog post helps you create pictographs and bar graphs. Make sure to read the blog so you know how to edit the images to make it match your particular needs.
