Ten Fun Digital Activities to Spark Learning
This week's post is focused on FUN. Each of the activities below are activities you can use to spark excitement and reignite the joy of learning. Pull out one of these activities when spring fever sets in to get your class through the end of the school year. Use the activities just for fun or as a springboard for digging deeper.
1. Star Wars Day Choice Board
May the 4th be with you! If you want something just for fun today check out Shannon Miller's blog to read all about her Star Wars Day choice board and access her free files to share with your students.
2. Google Earth's Carmen Sandiego Games
Play this classic game to find the thief. Learn geography and practice searching online. Use the clues to search the Internet to find out where the thief went next.
3. Now & Then: Contemporary Illustrators and Their Childhood Art Virtual Exhibit by the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art
Students will be inspired by this unique exhibit featuring the childhood art of 19 contemporary illustrators. Compare and contrast the childhood art to the artist's current work. Invite students to imagine their own potential should they continue to cultivate their own creativity.
*Note: This exhibit is built using Microsoft Sway, which does not play nicely with Google Chrome. If your students use Chrome, try navigating using the arrow keys on the keyboard and the clickable menu in the bottom right corner.
4. End of Year Memory Book
Students can share memories from this school year using this Seesaw Activity or the Google Slides version.
5. Arts & Crafts Week at Camp Khan Kids
Khan Kids is one of my favorite skill-based literacy and math apps for tablets. Read all about it here.
Last summer Khan created weekly calendars of activities for their virtual summer camp and all of the resources are still available online for free.
I particularly love this Arts & Crafts theme week. Use any of these fantastic activities with your kindergarten class. Look for more Camp Khan Kids activity calendars in summer 2021!
6. Virtual Tours Around the World
Another great resource by Shannon Miller, this Buncee interactive links tons of virtual field trips.
7. Superhero Library
Mary Ann Miller from Modern Montessori shared this Superhero Library on the Bitmoji Craze Facebook group, which links to several You Tube read alouds. Share this as a choice board or select specific texts for a genre study. Use her linked math problems and Heroic Character Traits graphic organizers if you wish or switch out the links. If your students have iPads have them create their own animated superhero story using Superhero Comicbook Maker by Duck Duck Moose.
8. Epic Pals
Join Sara Malchow and all of the Epic Pals in a monthly collaborative reading project. Each month she picks 6 Epic books and creates a Padlet for classes to collaborate on. Read her May blog post to learn more about getting involved.
9. Pixton Edu
I have not yet tried this with students, but I can't hold back sharing it any longer. Pixton Edu is a student-friendly avatar maker, like Bitmoji, but appropriate for school. You can create class photo illustrations and students can compose comics with their avatars.
10. Splash Dash
In this physics game from PBS Kids students use objects as tools to divert a water leak from ruining their comic books. They learn to use objects as tools to change the flow of the water. Connect this fun game to your science unit on Forces and Motion.
